Japanese Drama Recommendations

I have listed a few Japanese dramas that come to mind as dramas I have enjoyed watching over the past decade or so?! If you have any recommendations for me, please feel free to comment below! I would love to check it out.

Buzzer Beat (ブザー・ビート) 2009

Kamiya Naoki (Yamapi) shorter than the average player basketball player is known to crack under pressure. By chance he meets Shirakawa Riko (Kitagawa Keiko) a violinist when she finds his mobile on the bus. Their love goes through obstacles, as Naoki already has a girlfriend whom he has plans to propose to, and his coach who fell for Riko at first sight.

This is one of the few Japanese dramas that I rewatch. I love the development of Naoki and Riko's relationship, from platonic to becoming something more.

Proposal Daisakusen (プロポーズ大作戦) 2007
Iwase Ken (Yamapi) has fallen in love with his childhood friend, Yoshida Rei (Nagasawa Masami), but has never had the right timing when it comes to confessing or experience in love in general. He is too late as she is going to get married. At her wedding, a "fairy/time traveller enabler" who grants him the ability to go back in time to win his love.

I really enjoyed this drama, I was rooting for him the whole time! Yamapi is in this drama ;)

Hana Yori Dango (花より男子) 2005

I think everyone knows this drama by now or at least a version of it (Taiwanese/Japanese/Korean). No need to explain this one!

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (ヤマトナデシコ七変化) 2010

Four good looking guys in one boarding house. They are offered free board and lodging if they can turn the owner's niece, Nakahara Sunako (Oomasa Aya), into a lady. She always covers her face and only likes skulls, horror, vampires... anything spooky.

This drama is on my rewatch list, love the quirkiness! MABUSHI!

Otomen (オトメン(乙男)) 2009

Masamune Asuka (Okada Masaki) is the top Kendo fighter in the nation but also has a softer side he hides. He is into sweets, Shoujo manga, sewing and cooking. He falls for Miyakozuka Ryo (Kaho), a girl who is tough and a good fighter.

Asuko March (アスコーマーチ!) 2011

Yoshino Nao (Takei Emi) fails to get into the highschool of her preference. She ends up enrolling in a technical high school called Kenritsu Asuka Kougyou Koukou. Out of the 148 freshman, there are only 3 girls. She is the only girl in her class.

This drama was quite inspiring, as the school is not known to be the brightest but she helps to turn the school around. She helps the boys gain ambition.

Itazura na Kiss ~ Love in TOKYO (イタズラなKiss ~ Love in TOKYO) 2013

At the high school entrance ceremony, Aihara Kotoko (Miki Honoka), falls in love at first sight with Irie Naoki (Furukawa Yuki) when he presents the welcoming speech. She builds up the courage to confess but is turned down coldly by Naoki.

One day Kotoko's house is struck by a meteor, until her father and her find a new place, they stay at her father's friend's place. Who turns out to be Naoki's father.

This was the remake of the original which I haven't watched yet. I enjoyed the characters, especially Miki Honoka who played Kotoko spot on, she's so funny.

There is a second season if you're interested (all episodes are recapped on this blog).

Koinaka (恋仲) 2015

Definitely worth the watch, it is a light hearted Shoujo manga adaptation. The drama has a love triangle, involves first loves and, is generally a good watch.
