Let's start!
We are fast forwarded 9 months, it is now Kotoko, Satomi and Jinko's (her friends) final year as undergraduates. Both Satomi and Jinko are sad as they are already busy with their part time jobs; unable to enjoy the rest of their university life. Next we are introduced to a new character arriving at the university; a young blonde Caucasian lady with sunglasses on.
At the cafeteria, alone, Kotoko is pondering aloud whether it really is okay to stay jobless.
As Kotoko walks aimlessly, the blonde approaches her at a high speed. Kotoko immediately explains and apologises in JAPANESE that she doesn't understand English. Ms Blonde (for now) starts to speak in broken Japanese and asks for directions towards the Literature Department. She introduces herself as Christine Robins, is from England and is 19 years old. Chris for short. FIY Kotoko is 21.
They both head to the Medicine Department. Kotoko asks around for Naoki. She asks nearby a student.
The student eyes Kotoko up and down. Stating that Kotoko is different from what he had imagined as the girl who stole Naoki's heart. He takes note of Chris and introduces himself in English as Funatsu Seiichi. He offers to be her guide around campus, she rejects him
Chris: You and my type... are different. My ideal... is high. You're really not good, so I'm sorry.
Naoki arrives in the scene and is introduced to Chris. She is gobsmacked and does one of those eyebrow lifts. Kotoko asks whether Naoki will join her and Chris to eat. Naoki the gentlemen, asks Chris whether it is okay first. Chris is in her own world and doesn't respond until he asks in English.
Kotoko gets alarmed when Chris starts acting shy; touching her hair, looking at her feet. She wonders whether Chris is Naoki's ideal type. Seiichi gives Naoki a gentle reminder to not play around as your grades will slip, Naoki doesn't think this will be the case and reassures Seiichi that he will remain as no.1. Seiichi leaves aggravated.
At Kotoko's father's restaurant, Kotoko once again is worried about Chris being too cute. As Naoki makes his entrance, Chris's gaze follows him and settles on him when he sits in his seat.
Kin introduces himself first in Japnese but switches to broken English when Chris doesn't respond. Chris suddenly speak up, declaring she has found someone she likes, never having felt this way before. All this while still staring in Naoki's direction.
She stands up to walk over, Kotoko instinctively shields Naoki. Chris plants a long kiss on Kin who faints.
They all look (staff included) over at Kin, his lips are still puckered up as Chris tries to wake him up. Naoki helps out in the kitchen, whilst Kin is still unconscious with both hands in fists by his face with Kotoko and Chris watching over him.
The girls talk, Chris mentions that Kotoko has bad taste in men. Saying she has no sense of handsomeness? Right when Kotoko is defending Naoki, saying that Kin is not cool at all... Kin's eyes pop open, looking at Kotoko with sadness. They continue to argue about one another not having a sense of handsomeness... Kin frowns as he closes his eyes and assumes fetal position.
SEVERAL WEEKS LATER
Naoki is packing for a 3 days trip for an academic conference in Kobe. Kotoko asks about Seiichi, we get a flashback to the day Naoki was selected to present at the conference, Seiichi calls it a conspiracy that Naoki was chosen. Seiichi's blood boils as Naoki says he must like being no.2. The other students have to pull Seiichi away.
At home, Kotoko suddenly feels sick. Naoki accounts it to her over eating at lunch time. He places a hand on her forehead, noting it may be a slight fever. He asks her to open her mouth, then asks for her to lie down to examine her stomach. Kotoko is ecstatic as Naoki is playing doctor. He says it's not a game.
The next morning Naoki is gone, Kotoko spends time with her Naoki doll. Jinko and Satomi come over to visit. Wowed by Kotoko's bedroom.
Satomi suggest eating some fruit as she has brought a fruit basket along. Kotoko asks if there is grapefruit, Naoki's mother overhears by the door and drops her food tray. Rushing to check on Kotoko. His mother confirms Kotoko's grapefruit craving, nausea, fever and a late period. She diagnoses Kotoko as being pregnant.
Kotoko is unsure, Satomi urges her to remember whether anything has gone down. Kotoko recalls that something did happen. Satomi, Jinko and Naoki's mother scream for joy. Mother floats away in joy in order to tell Naoki's father. Nightfall comes as both soon to be grandpa's come running through the front door to find Kotoko. The two relish at being grandfathers.
Apparently the whole campus knows already as Kotoko is greeted by congratulations by all the people she comes across including Matsumoto Yuko (from the tennis club/she had a crush on Naoki). Yuko had heard from Naoki's mother who has been spreading the news like the wind.
Back home, Naoki's mother has already bought toys, baby clothes, mini clothes hangers etc. all in pink. Naoki's father arrives home with all baby essentials in blue. The two parents argue over whether the first born should be a girl or boy.
The argument is stopped as Kotoko's father arrives home with a special pregnancy meal.
Kotoko sits in bed, thinking about how cute the baby will be and Naoki's reaction to the news. Naoki arrives home to a message on the front door asking him to ring the door bell twice - from his mother of course. Naoki obliges and is greeted by streamers.
Kotoko nervously relays the news, Naoki's expression is blank as he asks whether she has been to the hospital yet. She replies not yet, he takes her to a clinic.
It's slightly awkward at the clinic, as Kotoko asks for Naoki's feelings when he first heard the news. He is silent, before he can answer, Kotoko is called in by the nurse. Kotoko goes in alone.
Kotoko walks out slowly and 90 degree bows at Naoki, apologising, as it was a false alarm. Kotoko isn't pregnant. Back at home, Kotoko is sad as she sits outside looking up at the stars. Naoki comes out to comfort her. They sit outside and talk.
Kotoko mentions that it is nice to look at the sky together. Kotoko confesses to having been outside for a while thinking about what she wants to do (with life). She tells Naoki that she wants a job where she can help Naoki with his job. In other words, she wants to be a nurse. She had this thought confirmed when she was in the clinic as the doctors and nurses worked together.
Naoki explains that being a nurse is different from any other job she has had previously, it is crucial as one slip up could mean life or death. He adds that unless you have the feeling of wanting to save someone, the job won't be compatible. Naoki smiles at Kotoko's confidence and determination as she convinces Naoki it is the job for her.
Naoki's conversation that was cut at the clinic (about the question Kotoko proposed); how did he feel when he heard she was pregnant. He answers honestly, that his mind went blank at that moment. Whilst he was waiting for Kotoko during her examination he had time to think, although he thought she wasn't pregnant but if she were.. he had thought about being a father for a short while. Stating that feeling was pretty good.
Kotoko narrates that she was happy to have heard Naoki had the baby in his mind and hopes to have a baby some day.
The next day we cut to Kotoko questionably studying... she doesn't understand anything (does this look familiar? Anyone?). Naoki comes by the library to pick her up to head home, she tries to coax Naoki into explaining the text to her. He relents...now at home it is night time...
Naoki gets fustrated after having explained the concepts but having Kotoko not understanding anything. Kotoko is now distracted by Naoki's angry face, saying it's cool.
Months and days have past - it's time for Kotoko's last exam. Kotoko panics as she realises she didn't bring her entrance ID. Naoki searches for something in his coat, tadah her entrance ID which was left on her table. Before she enters the examination centre she tells Naoki she loves him, he smiles in response.
Kin is closing up the restaurant with another chef who invites him for drinks, as he heads for drinks Chris is waiting at the front of the restaurant. Chris asks to walk home together, Kin makes it clear that he ONLY love Kotoko. Kin leaves her as the other chef announces that Kin has plans for the night already.
Chris arrives home in a somber mood. We zoom into her calendar with April 2nd marked with a circle. She notes that there isn't much time left.
